The primer

B vitamins are cofactors your cells need to convert food into usable energy. Deficiency in B12 (cobalamin) is genuinely common — especially in vegans, vegetarians, older adults, and people on long-term acid-reducing medications — and can cause fatigue, cognitive dulling, and neurological symptoms. The form matters: methylcobalamin is the biologically active form and is preferred over the cheaper cyanocobalamin, particularly for people with methylation variants. Sublingual lozenges bypass some absorption issues in older adults. B-complex products supply the full range and are useful for people with generally low intake, but taking B vitamins if you are not deficient will not give you an energy boost — your body simply excretes the excess. That includes B12 injections marketed as 'energy shots'. The one clear exception where B supplementation reliably helps energy is confirmed deficiency, so a blood test is the right first step for chronic fatigue rather than jumping straight to supplements.
